Spain Proposes Banning Social Media for Children Under 16

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez revealed on Tuesday a proposal to prohibit minors under the age of 16 from using social media platforms, as part of a wider initiative to enhance regulatory control.

“We will protect them from the wild west of the digital world,” Sanchez declared during the World Governments Summit in Dubai. “Social networks have become a failed state, where laws are ignored and crimes are tolerated.”

The Prime Minister indicated that platforms would be obligated to implement age-verification systems to restrict access.

Sanchez also announced that the government plans to introduce legislation next week making executives of digital platforms criminally accountable for distributing unlawful content. He called on prosecutors to actively investigate illegal material appearing online.

Additionally, he stated that Spain intends to criminalize the manipulation of algorithms. “Disinformation does not come out of nowhere,” he emphasized.

Sanchez cited alleged criminal activities as examples, including claims that child pornography was generated using the artificial intelligence tool Grok or circulated across other social media channels.

He further mentioned disinformation he accused Elon Musk, CEO of X, of spreading regarding Spain’s initiative to regularize roughly 500,000 migrants.

“This is only the tip of the iceberg,” Sanchez warned. “We are going to defend our digital sovereignty against any foreign interference.”
