SpaceX Secure Deal to Acquire AI Startup Cursor

(MENAFN) SpaceX has secured the right to acquire San Francisco-based AI coding startup Cursor for 60 billion dollars later this year — or alternatively, to pay 10 billion dollars tied to a collaborative arrangement — in a blockbuster move that marries cutting-edge AI software with one of the world's most powerful supercomputing infrastructures.

The private space and technology conglomerate announced the deal Tuesday via social media, stating that pairing Cursor's dominant product and its deep reach among elite software engineers with SpaceX's million H100-equivalent Colossus training supercomputer would allow both companies "to build the world's most useful models."

For Cursor, the partnership unlocks a critical bottleneck: raw computing power. The San Francisco startup, which only released its first agentic coding model, Composer, less than six months ago, has been racing to scale its AI capabilities but has been constrained by limited compute access.

"We've wanted to push our training efforts much further, but we've been bottlenecked by compute. With this partnership, our team will leverage xAI's Colossus infrastructure (a SpaceX subsidiary) to dramatically scale up the intelligence of our models," Cursor said in a statement.

Cursor CEO Michael Truell echoed that optimism on social media, saying he looks forward to partnering with the SpaceX team to scale up Composer, calling the partnership "a meaningful step" toward building more advanced AI-assisted programming systems.

The deal underscores a fierce and accelerating race among technology heavyweights to dominate the AI-powered software development space — with SpaceX now positioning itself as a formidable force not just beyond Earth's atmosphere, but deep within the AI frontier.
