“We verify a practitioner's credentials, qualifications, and competence,” Donna elaborates. “That can include confirming that they graduated from medical school, successfully completed internships, residencies or fellowships, maintain appropriate licensure, and meet the qualifications established by the healthcare organization. We are responsible for enrolling providers into various health plans, including federal, state and commercial insurance, to ensure they are compensated for the services they provide.”

PLP’s also gather information that may identify concerns requiring additional review. This can include information obtained through authorized primary sources and resources such as the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), which contains certain reports related to medical malpractice payments and adverse actions involving healthcare practitioners.

When a potential red flag is identified, whether related to education, professional history, licensure, competence, or quality, the PLP ensures that information is appropriately documented and brought forward for review.

“We gather and verify the information, identify potential red flags, and pass that information to the appropriate level of review,” Donna explains. “PLP’s do not make the ultimate appointment or privileging decisions and do not make those recommendations. Our responsibility is to make sure the decision-makers have accurate, complete information.”

Those decisions are made through the healthcare organization's established medical staff leadership and governance processes.

The work of a PLP also extends far beyond a practitioner's initial credentialing. Healthcare organizations conduct ongoing monitoring and periodic reviews to help ensure physicians and advanced practice professionals continue to meet established standards.

“The public should be reassured that healthcare organizations have processes in place for ongoing review of practitioners,” Donna assures. “Credentialing isn't something that simply happens once. It is part of a much larger provider lifecycle.”

Donna's work also focuses heavily on the professionals responsible for supporting these processes.

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified existing workforce pressures across healthcare and highlighted issues such as burnout, staffing shortages, and professional wellness. Team Med Global has continued to bring attention to those challenges within the Provider Lifecycle profession, including conducting research and wellness surveys designed to better understand the experiences of PLP’s.

One of Donna's greatest concerns for the profession is the shortage of trained and experienced Provider Lifecycle Professionals.

“I want to continue advancing the profession and preparing the next generation of PLP’s,” Donna desires.
